I Lie Awake

I lie awake and watch you gently sleeping,
Your rise and fall of chest with breath of air.

Content I lie, till morning sun comes creeping
To shine upon the spun-gold of your hair.

Each moment that I spend with you beside me
Is worth forever spent somewhere alone,
Or with somebody else, although he may be
Witty and intelligent, rich and urbane.

So this sleepless night to me is precious.

I am happy not to sleep when I’m with you.

Though I lie all night awake it is delicious.

The hours spent with you are far too few.

I‘ll watch here still and waking till you’re gone.

I can sleep on in the daytime all alone.
